One of the coolest dogs in the world has fallen victim to the "dachshund curse." It seems these long dogs get a back condition that renders them paralyzed or unable to walk. This is the pup my children grew up with, so it has been especially hard for my family. Even hubby who always says it's not his dog, but who the dog loves probably the most, is upset. It's been a rough day for all of us.
Poor Mr. Bones cannot walk very well. His back legs are basically useless. This is the guy that would run around the house like a crazy man when dinner was being prepared or if he could get someone to chase him! He's quite the character and has always behaved like a puppy. He's been moving slow the past few days but we thought it might be arthritis. He is over 10 years old. This morning he couldn't use his back legs. After a $400 vet trip we've learned he has the curse. It may heal and he could walk normally again, but only surgery can fix it properly, baring no complications. And there's a huge chance other places in his back will develop the same curse and cause pain for Bones. He's our pup and we love him enough that we would never let him suffer. He is resting comfortably on pain killers and other meds. He's been in our arms or laps most of the day and we can set him outside to relieve himself. He does wander if we're not watching him and he's drug himself in my studio, kitchen, and other rooms. He shouldn't be moving, but dachshunds are stubborn!
We're hopeful but realistic. It's no fun to see your teenage kids (and husband) break down during the family meeting to decide the fate of our little pup. And god knows I didn't bother with eye makeup today. It's been a cry fest. We've all agreed he can't suffer. So table food all around for Mr. Bones. It's helping the meds go down. Send my little pup some of your good vibes and I will be forever grateful.
Rest Bones, you know we all love you.
So, so sorry. Get well, Mr. Bones. Handsome lad.

Oh! Your dear little Mr. Bones melts my heart... reminds me so much of my precious Mo. I am truly sorry that you are all going through this.
ReplyDeleteI saw a show on TV once about a family whose dog also had this condition... they had a special cart with two wheels built, and it was attached to the dogs back side with a harness like strap. The dog no longer had to drag its back legs, but was now able to get around very easily, it's front legs moving and the back wheels following. Maybe Mr. Bones can be helped this way too,? Good luck and the very best of wishes.
